PhotoDetector Development Engineer / Scientist
Summary
Title:PhotoDetector Development Engineer / Scientist
ID:1046
Department:Development
Description
Headquartered in Charlton, Massachusetts (USA), Incom, Inc., in collaboration with government and university laboratories, is developing a new class of large area micro-channel plates (MCPs) and photodetectors for high energy physics and other applications.  The availability of large-area MCPs and MCP based photodetectors will enable new techniques in high energy physics, time-of-flight detectors for mass spectrometers, medical imaging (PET), as well as neutron detection for scientific and homeland security (non-proliferation) applications.

We are seeking individuals with the required scientific background, technical capabilities and hands on experience to understand the goals and objectives of the collaboration, to set up pilot production of Large Area MCPs and Photodetectors and to contribute to the technology development.  Reporting to the Director of R&D, the Photodetector Development Engineer / Scientist will be a key member of the team creating a manufacturing facility for these MCPs and photodetector devices.

Responsibilities
  • Work as an integral member of an R&D team setting up and operating a pilot production facility in a cleanroom for the manufacture of large area MCPs and MCP-based detectors.
  • Design, set up and operate equipment for characterizing performance of the MCPs and detectors.
  • Design, install, and operate equipment and tooling for the sealing of detector devices in an ultra high vacuum (UHV) chamber.
  • Develop and document processes for these operations, for transfer to Production personnel.

The successful candidate must understand program objectives, work independently to design and implement appropriate hardware, and be comfortable with hands-on experimental work.  This includes operating and maintaining vacuum equipment, fabricating custom prototype samples, developing manufacturing processes and refining a process that can be handed off to the production team at Incom.  Responsibilities will be commensurate with training and experience.

Qualifications
  • BA, BS, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Analog Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 3-5 years minimum experience in the development, manufacture, or use of MCPs or MCP-based detectors or other electron multipliers, for example night-vision products, photomultiplier tubes, MCP-based mass spectrometers or MCP-based photodetectors.
  • Hands-on experience with UHV equipment and following “best practices” for its operation and maintenance
  • Experience with detector signal measurement and the reduction of unwanted background signals
  • Experience with high voltage testing equipment
  • A demonstrated track record as a creative problem solver in related research and/or development
  • English fluency (speaking, comprehension, reading and writing) for the effective performance of the position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Essential Competencies: Initiative, creativity, integrity, accountability, collaboration and teamwork.

Direct experience in any of the following areas would be a plus:
  • Deposition and characterization of photocathode layers
  • Indium vacuum sealing of glass components
  • Integration of MCPs into devices such as photomultipliers
  • Development and testing of particle or photon detectors or photomultipliers
  • LabVIEW and/or SolidWorks
  • Experience in a cleanroom work environment
